Jiban Krishna Thakur

Jiban K Thakur is a contemporary artist based in Kolkata. With a formal education in visual arts- holding both a Bachelor and Master in Visual Arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkota- Jiban has developed a unique artistic voice that explores the profound relationship between humans and the natural environment. His work is characterized by lyrical abstractions, using ink on paper as his primary medium, though he also includes watercolours, acrylic and mixed media in his art practice. To quote the artist :

“Human beings are a part of nature, not above nature. Our knowledge may be great, but nature’s depth and beauty are limitless. True wisdom comes when we live in harmony with the natural world and respect all forms of life . Ink on paper is my truest voice within a practice of watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media. I trace the reciprocal bond between humans and nature: the tree as life’s anchor, roots as family and culture and birds as the breath of hope and longing. I reduce tree, human, and bird into lyrical abstractions that arrive from quiet, felt knowing rather than words.”

Jiban Thakur has exhibited widely across India in group and solo shows, his last solo show was held at India Habitat Center, New Delhi, in May 2026. Recognised for his artistic excellence, the artist has received several awards, including the Shilpi Sanman in 2024.

His philosophy and art practice invites viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of all life and the beauty found in simplicity and abstraction.
